Abbie - an update

Abbie hasn't been as busy as Nate these last couple of months - but she is learning & growing in leaps & bounds. She loves school & is quite the social butterfly. She loves to paint, sing, and is turning out to be our creative girl. She loves to make cards to cheer others up. She's a very happy girl & wants everyone around her to be happy too. She's not afraid of much & loves to climb, play & just have fun, just like a 6 year old girl should!

She loves to sing & dance - such a girly girl. She got some baking stuff for Christmas from Grandma Terry (mixing bowl , measuring cup & spoons, rolling pin, etc) & was very anxious to make sugar cookies. She did most of the work herself & had fun - but realized that cookies aren't as easy as they seem. There's a lot of work to make "shape cookies".

She's also very sensitive - we've found out that we really have to watch out for her feelings. Kassie learned to say Nate (na-ne) first and although we were working on Abbie it just wasn't happening. One night at bed time Abbie prayed that Kassie would learn to say her name so she would know that Kassie loved her too. OUCH - boy oh boy did we work on getting Kassie to say Abbie's name. She does now - loud & clear - & about 100 times a day at least. Kassie loves Abbie (we all do) but I'm glad Abbie knows that now too.

Earlier this month the Kindergarten class that Abbie is in (it's the only all day class in her school) & the 1st grade classes did their music concert for the year. She was so excited for us to come & see her sing. They had asked us to dress them in nice clothes. I'm guessing that the music teacher told them no t-shirts. As I helped her to get ready she kept reminding me no t-shirts (as I'm putting on her church dress) - she wouldn't even wear an undershirt! Then when I put on her sweater she asked if it was a t-shirt - I assured her it was a sweater & NOT a t-shirt. Such a funny little girl. She did great at her concert. We were almost as proud of her as she was of herself, it's occasions like this we wish we had more family near by to share in these experiences & cheer her (and the other kids) on. I guess they (my kids) don't know what they are missing (not yet anyway) - but since I grew up in the same town with both sets of my grandparents, several aunts & uncles & countless cousins - I feel like I've taken something away from them - not having the kind of family bonds that I grew up with - but I digress.

Here is a clip from her concert - there are more on youtube (search for oneradfam)

Abbie loves school & is doing great. I go to the school once a week to volunteer in Nate & Abbie's classrooms (I alternate every other week between the classes). One week shortly after Martin Luther King Jr. Day I was walking the class and noticed that one hall was decorated with self portraits of the kindergarten students along with their "dreams". I found Abbie's & couldn't help but to laugh out loud & take a picture.

Her self portrait
Her "dream"
In case you can't read her "dream" it says "no school no homework". This was so funny to me because she LOVES school & never complains about doing her homework. I wonder if someone offered this as a suggestion & she just wrote it down or if it really was her own idea - either way it made me laugh.

Abbie is a great helper - she loves to help in primary, at school & at home (unless it's cleaning her room). She is constantly trying to help Kassie with just about everything. With Kassie growing & learning so much it's becoming frustrating for her to have so much help and she's been quite upset with Abbie but it doesn't seem to slow Abbie down at all. On more than one occasion we've had to get after Abbie to let Kassie do something on her own. The new baby will be good for both of them, it will give Abbie someone to help & dote on & will give Kassie a break to be a little more independent. She is a great big sister.

Sorry about the sander noise in the background - Dan & Nate were working on their derby car.

I am grateful for Abbie and all she ads to our family. She is always on the look out for others to help & to uplift. The love & happiness she brings with her kind spirit has been such a blessing to us. She can be tough when she needs to but she's our softy for sure!
